The sklero demon was as ugly as any clown, tiny compared to Mo, and full of a pixie or imp type of energy. Big eyes, big mouth, spiky hair, a childish, grating laugh. That laugh echoed down the hall of cells, raising the hair on my arms, as I peered in at him through the six-inch slit of his cell.

It’s no surprise to me that so many humans have nightmares about clowns. There is nothing remotely cute or funny about them, or the demons that originally inspired them, in my opinion.

Those poor kids. I wondered if any of the missing children were still alive. Fat chance this demon would tell me.

But I had Michael’s sword on my side, and I know a thing or two about getting entities to talk.

The sklero acted much like Mo had. It chattered unintelligently, giggled, locked pupil-less eyes on me as I watched it through the door. I had the feeling it was telling me something, but I didn’t understand its language of choice.

“What do you think?” Rad asked. “Possession?”

“Foaming at the mouth, seizures, those eyes…” I nodded. “Same as Mo, only more Chuckie and less Evil Dead.”

“Have you been Netflixing without me again?”

“When do I have time to Netflix?”

Sal stood on my other side. “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a demon possess another demon.”

“Exactly.” The sword pulsed in my hand. Volante had moved to my other arm, not liking the angelic juice coming off of it. “Which is why I think Michael is possessing both this one and Mo somehow. Which means, he’s found a way into the Institute.”

A heavy silence fell as my entourage absorbed that.

“Even if he is inside this demon,” I said, “he can’t seem to do anything of importance yet, and that’s how I intend to keep it. He’s stirring up the Fallen too. I don’t know how, but he is. Anything he can do to cause me trouble and keep me distracted from protecting myself from him.”

“It’s a smart plan.” Rad acknowledged Cole who came down the dank hallway and joined us. “The more he keeps you off your game, the more vulnerable you are.”

“The vamps are on their way,” Cole said. “What are you planning?”

“I haven’t decided.” I shrugged. “A little torture, a bit of bloodletting, maybe some killing.”

“Kali,” Sal warned.

“As enforcer, you know I put an end to many demons in order to save humans, right?” I asked the priest.

He let go of a tight sigh. “I’m aware.”

Rad bristled slightly at the condemnation in Sal’s voice. “This bastard hurt and killed six children in the past couple of weeks. He deserves to die.”

Sal nodded, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “You’re right. He’s probably unrepentant and unredeemable.”

Redemption. What an interesting and truly human concept. I swept my hand over the physical and magical locks. “Let’s get the show on the road.”

Inside, the demon lunged at me. I smacked him with the flat side of the blade and sent him flying back against the stones. He hissed, his cheek sizzling from the burn clearly outlined on his pasty skin.
